40th Paraw Regatta Festival Winners

Two new sailboat names have been added in the circle of winners in the Paraw Regatta Festival.

For the 40th Paraw Regatta Festival, sailboats Ninia & Issiah & Maxx and Cherlyn, dominated the main events yesterday.

Ninia & Issiah & Maxx owned by Hector Espinosa of Sto. Niño Sur, Arevalo dominated among the 50 entries in the category A and received P50,000. Meanwhile, Cherylyn owned by Federico Tantiado of Parara Sur, Tigbauan bested other 23 entries in Category B received P75,000.

Other winners for Category A, for Paraw’s having a waterline length ranging from 16 feet and below, were Piranha 3 of Benito Gordoncillo of Camangay, Leganes, second; and Arlyn of Orlando Demetillo also of Camangay, Leganes, third.

For Category B, for Paraw’s having a waterline length ranging from 17.5 to 22 feet, second place went to last year’s champion “Marjohnec“ of Hector Espinosa.

Other winners were “Kristine” of Oscar Espinosa of Arevalo, third; “2 Angels” of Jayde Pauchano of Leganes, fourth; “Princess Jolina 2” of Rolando Tajanlangit Sr. of Tigbauan, fifth; “Blue Angel” of Alejandro Elemento of Guimaras, sixth; “Two Sister R” of Roger Genite of Leganes, seventh; “Jonel” of Nelson Guzman of Tigbauan, eighth; “Jasmine Shane” of Jay Ryan Maming of Aklan and “Nezar” of Honorato Espino, the owner of Tatoy’s in Villa, Arevalo.

Builders of the paraws, Henry Tañagas for Category A and Rico Tantiado of Category B also received P4,000.

The race course for Categories A and B cover approximately a distance of 23.8 kilometers, which has its starting point at Tatoy’s Manokan and Seafoods in Sto. Niño Sur Arevalo to Fort San Pedro to Sto Rosario, Buenavista Guimaras to Nagaba Point Jordan to Bundolan Point and return to Tatoy’s as the finish line.

The Paraw Regatta is a race among native outriggers in the straits between Iloilo City and Guimaras Island. It is called Paraw in the llongo vernacular.

Ilonggos still use paraw as a means of transportation as well a source of livelihood. With a fresh breeze, the paraw is a strikingly fast boat, making 20 to 30 kph through the waves.

A total of 74 all painted paraws were recorded this year -- 50 in Category A and 24 in Category B.

The organizers allotted P438,000 for the prizes; P171,000 for Category A; P217,000 for Category B and consolation prizes of P1,000 each for the 50 other finishers.

The theme, “Sailing the Best Wind,” was manifested by the crew's skills to navigate the unique geophysical coastline of Iloilo-Guimaras Strait, according to Manny Villa, Paraw Regatta chairman.

Meanwhile, to attract more tourists and to gain more sponsors for the event, the foundation will open the international competition next year.

Teacher from Leganes brings pride to Ilonggos

It is said that teaching is a noble profession. Teachers can be considered heroes as they are the ones that educate the populace and prepare them for their future.

But while all teachers deserve praise and honor for their noble deeds, only a few really get recognition. And one of them is Zoilo Pinongcos, Jr., of Leganes National High School (LNHS), who won two awards in the national level in 2009 and 2010 for showing exemplary performance in teaching profession.

In September 2010, Pinongcos, a pride of Brgy. Guihaman, Leganes, Iloilo was included in top five national honorees of “The Many Faces of the Teacher” which is a continuing public service and advocacy campaign of Bato Balani Foundation Inc, the social arm of one of the country’s leading educational publisher, Diwa Learning Systems Inc.

The five top honorees were chosen among the 100 nominees all over the country. Other awardees are Donald Dungog High School Teacher from Mactan Cebu; Efren Bino, Elementary School Teacher from Albay; Ambeth Ocampo, College Professor from National Capital Region (NCR) and Cristina Medina, a SPED Teacher from Laguna.

Organizers used the following criteria for evaluation:  person of integrity and morality; in good relations with students, colleagues, community members, and family; commitment and dedication to the teaching vocation; strength of values or principles applied in teaching and personal life and involvement in school and community activities.

Almost the same criteria were also used by the Metrobank Foundation when it conducted “Search for Outstanding Teachers” in 2009 wherein Pinongcos was one of the 10 awardees in secondary level from 173 nominees coming from various public and private educational institutions in the country.

Other secondary level awardees are Shena Faith Ganeta of Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus in Iloilo City, Rochelle Papasin of Philippine Science High School-Southern Mindanao Campus in Davao City, and Ma. Petra Romualdo of Minapan High School in Tulunan, Cotabato.

Pinongcos, a Master Teacher 1, believed that his faith in God, achievements, innovation and community outreach programs helped him a lot to get the two awards that brought honor and name to his school.

In his 25 years in the field of teaching, he said receiving the two awards are among the rewards for his efforts and greatest achievements, aside from sharing his knowledge to his students.

Pinongcos scored high among other nominees because of his several trainings for the Intel Teach Training Program at the national, regional and division levels.

After the training, Pinongcos has shared what he learned from the trainings to his fellow teachers who have limited computer exposure and experiences so that they could acquire basic technology literacy skills and introduces them to 21st century approaches to teaching and learning process.

The awardee also served as an ICT (Information and Communication Technology) trainer for our-of-school youths and barangay officials in Leganes town.

Also as part of the innovative teaching approaches, Pinongcos has created “Barangay Ko, Tipigan Ko” (I care for my barangay), a form of learning that promotes social and community awareness among the students in which they could adopt a barangay and conduct an assessment survey on its strengths and weaknesses.

Aside from these, Pinongcos is an active extraordinary minister of the Holy Communion in the Parish of St. Vincent Ferrer in Leganes, Iloilo.
